Stanford Increases Aid for Middle Class Families

Stanford University will no longer ask families earning $45,000 or less to help cover the costs of their children's education. It is also cutting the amount of support it asks from families earning between $45,000 and $60,000 by half.

This move makes Stanford the latest of several elite colleges and universities that are offering tuition relief to middle class families.

Harvard revised its aid guidelines two years ago, reducing the amount of support expected from families earning between $40,000 and $60,000 and excusing families earning $40,000 or less from covering any educational costs.

Princeton, Yale, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have also increased aid levels for lower- and middle-class students and families in recent years.
