College Costs Rose Significantly Over the Past Year

The College Board announced that the average cost of tuition and fees at a public, 4-year college for in-state residents rose a staggering 14.1% this past year. While some of this increase was due to state budget cuts, higher education costs still rose across the board.

Average public 4-year colleges and universities for in-state residents:

Tuition and fees: $4,694 14.1% increase
Room and board: $10,636 6.6% increase

Average public 2-year colleges and universities for in-state residents:

Tuition and fees: $1,905 13.8% increase

Average private 4-year colleges and universities:

Tuition and fees: $19,710 6.0% increase
Total cost with R&B: $26,854 5.7% increase
